For me Guedelon Castle is one of the must do things in France.
This is a castle that is still under construction. The difference is that this is being built using traditional Medieval techniques from circa 800 years ago. When we visited the project was already 20 years in construction with an estimated 5 further years to completion.
Once you enter the site you are transported into a living museum. There is no power in use any where and all the craftsmen are using traditional hand tools. There are demonstrations of stone masonry, carpentry, tile making, smithying in the forge and much more. The cranes are giant human size hamster wheels that drive the pulleys. There is a mill to grind the flour located down in the woods as well all the infrastructure required to sustain the building community that would have been required on a project of this nature. Transport for materials is provided by horse and cart , stone is quarried on site. This is more of a social project than anything else. Please add this to your to do list or bucket list and check out their www site by following the link above.
There is a separate parking area for approx. 15 motorhomes just to the rear of the on-site shop.
