Nick’s Tips #39 – Tripping the Light! Fantastic!

Nick’s Tip #39

Tripping the light fantastic

How many times have you needed to reset the electric on the post because its tripped whilst on a hook up? I guess that at some point most of us have done this or at least seen someone else out of there van flicking the switch back up.

Most sites these days seem to offer 16 amp supplies to each pitch. Some however only offer 10 amps. The 10 amp version is only just slightly more than it takes to run your heating on electric on the 2000w setting, if you then turn the kettle on for a brew you will inevitably trip the MCB due to overload. It is important to remember that there is always some background consumption from the battery charger, telly on standby and the fridge as well iss the inevitable chargers for phones etc. These will not ad up to a great deal but are still part of the equation.

The calculation for you to work out electrical consumption (Amps) is; Watts÷Volts=Amps (1000÷230=4.34)

Power consumption in KW’s and Amps
Kettle 2000 (2kw) Approx 8.7 amps
Kettle 750w Approx 3.3 Amps
Toaster and Iron 1300w (1.3kw) Approx 5.6 Amps
Microwave oven 1200w (1.2kw) Approx 5.2 Amps
LED TV 50w Approx 0.2 Amps
Fan Heater 1000w (1kw) Approx 4.3 Amps
Battery Charger 100w Approx 0.4 Amps
Fridge 125w Approx 0.5 Amps
Table lamp 60w Approx 0.2 Amps
Blown air heater 1000w-2000w (1-2kw) Approx 4.3 – 8.7 Amps
Air con 1000w (1kw) Approx 4.3 Amps
The above examples may not be exactly the same as your appliances. The calculation for you to work out electrical consumption (Amps) is; Watts÷Volts=Amps (1000÷230=4.34)
