Wissant Aire de Camping Car
Pas De Calais
I first came here on a junior school trip 43 years ago, Yes I really am that old. We also visited with the kids in our first motorhome about 13 years ago. That time we stopped on a campsite that I have to describe as poor. Since then the locals have built an Aire just on the edge of the village. This is located on the D940 a few hundred meters North of the main village. The Aire has a sewage disposal point and a drive over drain but no running water. It can accommodate approx. 30 vans with ease. The Aire also acts as bus parking, you will see the long bays in the middle.
Wissant is a great little town/village. With access to a beach that stretches from Cap Griz Nez at the southern end to Cap Blanc Nez at its Northern tip. When the tide is out the beach is stunning with a backdrop of beautiful white dunes. The dunes hide some history from the darker days of this region. Still existing today are many of the German built fortifications from the second world war. These were her to deter an invasion from the allied forces. It turns out that they built them in the wrong place.
The heart of the village as a few great bars, restaurants and a Spar shop as well as a couple of hotels. I liked “Nicoles” where the simple menu is only either Mussels and fries or Ham and Fries!! Great food at a great price.
We are here as we have an early tunnel crossing in the morning and Google maps suggests that it is only a 15 minute drive from here.
Details of the Aire can be found in “All the Aires North” book from vicarious books. www.vicarious-books.com
